The road to a new era for online casinos in the UK has run into kind of a speed bump over a reported spat between Gambling Commissioner Peter Dean and other government officials over the new Gambling Commission’s approach to regulating the gambling industry of the United Kingdom, of which online casinos would be a part. Apparently, Mr. Dean said that the Gambling Commission (which was created last October, 2005) will be something of a “laissez-faire regulator”, letting casinos and companies do pretty much their own thing. This raised alarm bells among cabinet members who noted that the gambling industry is “not just another industry” like the film industry or recording industry.

When Mr. Dean went – according to reports – and said that regional casinos with million-pound (sterling) jackpots are “not such a big deal”, one government official in the know and more than a critic of such attitudes toward gambling stated “The Gambling Commission has both the platform and the power to keep the casinos industry safe, crime free and on its toes. Culture Minister Richard Caborn phoned Peter Dean to make it absolutely clear that we expect him and his commission to use these powers to full effect as mandated by law.”

When the new Gambling Commission was formed last fall to replace the previous gaming authority, there were high hopes that the new commission would act quickly to work out a licensing arrangement for online casinos, which are allowed to operate but not base their servers in the UK. But if there is internal turmoil in the commission or between the commission and government of Tony Blair, there is no telling when the Gambling Commission will be able to do what needs to be done for online casinos to possibly move their online gambling operations to the British Isles.
