The Venetian Hotel and Casino, a fixture on the Las Vegas Strip, has recently struck a blow against online casinos wishing to use the word “Venetian” in their casinos names with a recent ruling in The Venetian’s favor by a federal judge in Virginia. The ruling was made against Global DIP, an online casinos corporation based in Costa Rica and stated that the company violated the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act of 1999 by using online casinos names like Venetian Gold, Venetian Gold Casino, Venician Gold, and others similar to those names.

"The court finds that defendant domain names are confusingly similar to (The Venetian's) service marks because a reasonable consumer might think that they were used, approved, or permitted by (The Venetian)," U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee of Alexandria, Virginia wrote in an opinion for his July 28 ruling. Venetian spokesman Ron Reese stated that, "This should be a signal to any entity that they will not be able to profit off The Venetian brand."

Many online casinos would like to use names that bring to mind the well-known brands of casinos in Las Vegas and elsewhere for the sentimental value and association with winning big jackpots that often comes with thinking about these casinos. The Venetian and other well-known land-based casinos in the U.S. have not really gotten involved with the online casinos industry, which is growing in popularity worldwide, because the Department of Justice has stated that online casinos and online gambling operations would violate a 1961 federal statute barring the use of phone lines to place bets across state lines. This may not be so big an issue in the future though, as more and more internet users are switching to cable lines or other means of connecting to the web and the jurisdiction of that 1961 law is circumvented.
